How long will an e-max crown last?

Provided that patients look after their emax dental restorations, crowns can last 10
years or even more. There are a few things that patients can do to keep their emax
crowns healthy, strong and protected. Brush away from the gum line using a soft-
bristled brush, brush 3 times a day, floss regularly in a week and use a non-alcoholic

While PFM may cause metal allergies, emax is a ceramic glass and will not cause
any metal allergy reactions.

The ceramic glass is quite durable making it easier to refine and polish during the
fitting and rehearsal stages of the treatment without cracking or breaking.

Once the technician has prepared the crown design, with collaboration of the patient;
the CAD/CAM milling process is reasonably fast on monolithic emax blocks. Patients
can expect results for the laboratory within 24 hours.

The durability of this product allows for minimal tooth preparation. Preserving more of
your tooth than PFM crown preparation would require. It’s important to preserve as

What are the disadvantages of Emax crowns?
Compared to PFM, other ceramic materials and even zirconia, Emax is, with good
reason, the most expensive dental restoration material. However durable, emax
cannot support whole bridges like zirconia can. Emax can break if we don’t look after
them and expose them to abrasive objects, or treating them to bad habits like nail
biting or chewing on pens, or eating an apple. Since emax is not recommended for
aesthetic purposes, the anterior teeth benefit much more from emax than posterior
teeth would. Emax is not always suitable for all patients.

Who is not suitable/ eligible for e-max crowns?

The least suitable dental issues to fix using emax dental crowns are patients that
present these varying bite issues: a deep bite, class 3 bite, crossbite, and straight
bite (when bottom and top teeth meet at the tip of the teeth). With these bite issues,
the crowns are likely to clash resulting in a high risk of breakages and fractures.

Patients that present with damaged teeth include: too many fillings or decay on front
teeth, a dead tooth, and root treated tooth. Having these types of damaged teeth are
not fixable by emax because the translucency will not hide the colour differences on
the natural tooth. If the patient took tetracycline medications as a child, emax will also
not fix these colour disparages.

Patients with missing teeth are also not suitable because emax cannot be used in
dental bridge treatments.

Who is suitable for e-max crowns?

Patients that present with open bite and class 1 & 2 bite are suitable for emax crowns
and have a lower risk of breakages and fractures compared to other bite issues
presented above. That is the deep bite, class 3 bite, crossbite, and straight bite.
Additionally, all bite issues may be fixed with orthodontic treatment before patients
wish to have emax crowns.

Emax is a very good option for patients with diastema (abnormally larger gaps
between teeth), patients who are unable to improve the whiteness of their natural
teeth. Slight teeth alignment deviation issues, uneven smile line, the resizing of small
lateral incisors and fractured or cracked teeth.
